The weather outside sure is frightful! But does that mean our bodies feel that way too?
We all feel sore and tired after shoveling snow or participating in winter sports, but is it because of the activity or the weather?
Turns out it’s a combination of both!
If you’re feeling more sore than usual after working out in the winter you’re not alone! Turns out the cold impacts our muscles and joints! When it’s cold outside our bodies lose more heat and our muscles contract which leads to tightness throughout the body. With our bodies feeling tighter, that means muscles can lose their full range of motion and our nerves can easily be pinched. This is because our bodies work harder in the cold temperatures! This also means we have longer recovery times because the cold weather can actually damage our muscle tissues. Which could also be the reason why you’re feeling so much more sore in the winter weather ever after your normal everyday workout!
How do you combat the soreness?
Muscle soreness is super common after a hard workout and is expected to last a few days, especially if you haven’t been working out on a regular basis. But if you’re muscle soreness is getting to be too much, it’s time to start incorporating a longer warm-up period before each workout to get your blood pumping and your body ready to work hard!
